Nottinghamshire has a long and colourful history, and today
local historians are still engaged in, exploring, and writing about their
heritage.
They have their own local history society and their books help
to keep this history alive.
Ztan Zmith is one such author and local historian, and he has
kindly allowed us to print some of his short histories of local people.
1. Joe's War
The factual story
of a local soldier's bravery during the Boer War.
2.
What A Life
The story of Joseph Hooley of Wollaton Village, born in 1757,
he was destined to be press-ganged into serving on a man-of-war, and later
kidnapped by agents of the east India Company.
3. The Plaguing of Mrs Rose
A tragic account Margaret Rose, a victim of the
Asiatic Cholera
epidemic of 1832
4. The Old General
The Story of the extraorinary life of Benjamin Mayo. Though he was born, lived and died in the Workhouse, Ben won the affection of the people of Nottingham, and the statue of the 'Old General' can still be seen today.
