Motorcycle Mayhem

The lunatics from the MOT (Morons on Transport?) have waved through another piece of crazy legislation regarding the emergency stop requirements of motorcyclists taking their test, only to discover, later, that each rider is compelled to perform an emergency stop at 31 m.p.h. and 50 mph.; one mile an hour over the 30 mph. speed limit.

This craven bunch of cowards, instead of informing the EU that having now studied the proposal, and found it both dangerous and stupid, they will not be incorporating the legislation into UK law, propose instead to spend millions of pounds of taxpayers' money building special roads and streets purely to comply with their EU masters wishes. Motorcyclists will be compelled to take these revised etremely hazourdous and pointless new tests.

This, despite the fact that it is impossible for any motorcyclist to travel at exactly 31 mph. using a cable driven speedometer as no speedometer manufacturer, in Europe or America, can guarantee the accuracy of such instruments within 10% - 20%.

The is the very reason that all motorists are allowed a 10% + 2 mph leeway before being fined for speeding.  We used to have to take our Panda Cars in to be calibrated once a month to obtain convictions for speeding. Nowadays patrol cars use radar to estimate the speed of vehicles, the drivers of which still have to rely on a cable driven speedometer.

To comply with the legislation each and every motorcycle speedometer will have to be taken for re-calibrating immediately prior to the test, which raises the question of just how a motorcyclist can keep his eyes on the speedometer to make sure he reaches precisely 31 mph as required and still keep his attention on the road?

And can anyone, explain what the difference will be in an emergency stop made at 31 mph and one made at 30 mph?

My own guess is, Sweet Fanny Adam’s, but because of the negligence and sheer stupidity of her department, the disaster of a Transport Minister, Ruth Kelly, will cost us millions upon millions of pounds.

She should go far!

Will motorcyclists now be barred from making and emergency stop at speeds other than 31mph and 50 mph?
